Why Montville porches need screens more than most

Montville has a mosquito problem that has nothing to do with anyone’s housekeeping. It is geography. The town sits along the Thames River, the Oxoboxo River and Oxoboxo Lake run right through Oakdale, and there is standing wetland scattered through the wooded lots between Route 32 and Route 163. That combination — slow water, heavy tree canopy, and humidity that sits in the low spots after sundown — is close to ideal mosquito habitat.

The practical consequence is familiar to anybody who has built a deck here. You spend real money on a covered porch or a back deck, and then from late June through September you use it for about forty minutes an evening before giving up and going inside. The furniture sits there looking nice. That is an expensive room you are not using.

A motorized retractable screen fixes the specific problem without creating a new one. Screening a porch permanently works, but it also means you are looking through mesh in October when there is not a mosquito within a mile, and it changes how the house looks from the street year-round. A retractable system rolls up into an aluminum housing above the opening and is essentially invisible when you do not need it.

Connecticut takes mosquito-borne illness seriously enough to run a statewide trapping and testing program — the state’s Mosquito Management Program publishes weekly results through the season, and New London County sites regularly turn up West Nile virus. Reducing how much time your family spends being bitten is not purely a comfort decision.

Deployed, the screen encloses the opening. Retracted, the housing reads as a piece of trim.

How a motorized retractable screen actually works

The mechanism is simpler than most people expect. A fabric mesh is wound on a roller tube inside an aluminum housing mounted above the opening. A low-voltage tubular motor sits inside that tube. Press a remote, a wall switch, or a button in an app, and the motor unwinds the mesh downward. Vertical side channels or a weighted bottom bar hold it taut so it does not billow.

Reverse it and the mesh winds back up out of sight. There is no folding, no storing, no seasonal wrestling with panels in the garage. The whole cycle takes 15 to 30 seconds depending on the drop height.

Where we install them around Montville

Covered porches

The most common project by a wide margin. A covered porch already has the structure overhead, which makes it the cleanest install and the biggest immediate change in how much you use the space.

Open decks with a pergola

If there is a pergola, arbor, or roof structure to mount to, we can screen the bays. Without overhead structure there is nothing to hang a housing from — that is the one hard limit.

Patios and three-season rooms

Screening a patio under a deck or converting a three-season room to open-air-on-demand are both straightforward. Masonry mounting takes longer but works fine.

Entry and French doors

A single retractable door screen lets you leave the door open for airflow. Popular on Oakdale capes and colonials where there is no existing storm-door screen.

Garage openings

A retractable garage screen turns the bay into usable shop or hangout space in summer without committing the opening permanently.

Large multi-bay openings

Openings past roughly 16 feet need either a double-drop configuration or a heavy-duty motor so the mesh does not sag across the span. We spec that at measurement.

Choosing your mesh: bugs, sun, or privacy

The housing and motor are the hardware decision. The mesh is the decision that changes how the space feels, and it is worth understanding before you are standing in front of a sample book.

Mesh type What it does best Trade-off
Standard insect mesh Keeps mosquitoes, gnats, and flies out at the lowest cost Minimal sun or glare control
Solar / shade mesh Blocks 80–90% of solar heat and glare as well as insects Slightly darker outward view
Privacy mesh Limits sightlines into the porch from the road or neighbours Reduced view out, especially at dusk
High-clarity “invisible” mesh Near-unobstructed view — best for water or woodland views Premium cost, less heat rejection

If heat and glare are the real problem rather than bugs, a screen may not be the right product at all. Our exterior solar shade page covers the heat-first approach, and our comparison of motorized screens versus retractable awnings lays the two options side by side.

Motorized or manual — an honest comparison

We sell both, and we do not push the motor when it is not warranted. Here is the actual decision framework.

  Motorized Manual
Upfront cost 25–40% higher Lower
Best opening size 8 ft and up — and essential past 16 ft Under 8 ft
Daily convenience Effortless, so it actually gets used Fine if it stays down all season
Power required Battery or hardwired None
Automation Sun, wind, and timer sensors available Not available
Long-term service Motor is one more component Fewer parts to service

The pattern we see: on a large porch opening, homeowners who choose motorized use the space dramatically more, simply because lowering the screen costs them nothing in effort. On a single door, a quality manual screen is often the smarter buy. If you want the system to talk to the rest of the house, our guide to smart home shade and screen integration covers the control options.

What motorized retractable screens cost in Montville

We do not quote screens over the phone, because the price depends on the opening — width, drop height, mounting surface, and how power reaches the motor. What follows is an honest budgeting range so you know before we visit whether this is a project you want to pursue.

Scope Manual Motorized
Single door or small opening (to 4 ft) $600–$1,200 $1,000–$2,400
Medium opening (6–10 ft) $1,300–$2,400 $2,200–$4,000
Large porch bay (12–16 ft) $2,200–$3,600 $3,200–$6,500
Full multi-bay enclosure (20–40+ ft) — $8,000–$20,000+

The variables that move the number most: total width, ceiling or header height, whether side channels are needed, mesh grade, motor class, and mounting complexity. A straightforward wood-framed porch header is a half-day job. Masonry, fieldstone, unusual angles, or hardwired electrical add time. Smart-home integration and sensors typically add $200 to $500 per opening. For a fuller breakdown see our Connecticut motorized screen cost guide.

Built for Connecticut, not a catalogue

Montville is a few miles up the Thames from open salt water, which means installations here see real humidity and some salt influence, plus a genuine freeze-thaw cycle every winter. That drives a handful of specification choices we make by default rather than as upgrades.

Powder-coated aluminum housings

Aluminum rather than steel, with a quality powder-coat finish. It does not develop rust streaks down the trim after a few humid summers.

IP44-rated outdoor motors

Any motor exposed to weather should be rated for moisture ingress. We position housings so wind-driven rain is not sitting on the motor end.

Mesh rated for UV and mildew

PVC-coated polyester and fiberglass meshes hold up to sun and to the damp that collects in shaded wooded lots. Expect 7 to 12 years before the mesh wants replacing.

Serviceable design

Mesh can normally be replaced without touching the motor or the housing, which keeps a mid-life repair from becoming a full replacement.

How the process works

Four steps, one crew, and you deal with the owner throughout.

1

On-site measurement

We measure every opening precisely, confirm the mounting surface and header structure, check ceiling height, and discuss mesh and control options. Custom screens cannot be resized on site, so this visit matters.

2

Specification and quote

You get a written quote with the specific mesh, motor, and housing colour spelled out — not a range and a handshake.

3

Custom fabrication

Typically three to six weeks for domestic systems, longer for special-order hardware. Ordering in early spring is how you get screens working by the Fourth of July.

4

Installation and handover

Housing anchored to structure, side rails set, motor limits programmed, then we cycle the screen repeatedly and walk you through every control before we leave.

Montville retractable screen questions, answered

Do the screens stay up all winter?

The housing and side channels stay mounted year-round — they are built for it. The mesh retracts inside the housing, which protects it. On very exposed installations we sometimes recommend removing the mesh for the season, and we will tell you at the estimate whether yours is one of those.

Can you screen my deck if it has no roof over it?

Not directly. A retractable screen needs overhead structure to mount the housing to. If you have a pergola or arbor we can usually work with it. If the deck is fully open, the honest answer is that you would need to add structure first, and we will tell you that rather than sell you something that will not work.

Will it hold up to wind?

Side channels and zip-guided tracks are what make the difference. A screen hanging free will move in a gust, and movement is what wears mesh. On exposed openings we spec channels as standard, and motorized systems can add a wind sensor that retracts the screen automatically past a set threshold.

How long does installation take?

A single straightforward opening is typically two to four hours. A multi-bay porch enclosure can run a full day or two. The long part of the timeline is fabrication, not installation — usually three to six weeks.

Does it really keep mosquitoes out, or just slow them down?

A properly installed screen with side channels and a sealing bottom bar keeps them out. The failures we get called to fix are almost always gaps — a bottom bar that does not meet an uneven deck surface, or a side channel that was not sealed to the post. Getting the seal right at the edges is most of the job.

Do you serve Uncasville and Oakdale specifically, or just Montville centre?

All of it — Oakdale, Uncasville, Mohegan, Chesterfield, and out toward Gales Ferry and Norwich. We are on this side of the river regularly and there is no travel surcharge for any of it.
