Why Groton homes are screen country
If you own a house in Groton, you already know the town is mostly water. The Thames River runs down its western edge, the Mystic River along its eastern edge, and Long Island Sound and Fishers Island Sound wrap the bottom. That geography is why people here ask us about motorized retractable screens: the same breeze that makes a deck pleasant in July brings salt, pollen and a steady supply of mosquitoes off the marsh edges.
A motorized retractable screen rolls into a slim aluminum housing and drops on guide tracks when you press a button. Down, it blocks insects and cuts glare. Up, it disappears and the view is yours again. That is the whole appeal, and it is why the product suits a town where half the value of a porch is what you can see from it. Our motorized screens are built by SunPro with Somfy motors, in widths up to 25 feet for a single unit and in several mesh types.
This page is for homeowners in Groton and the neighbors we get calls from most: Gales Ferry, Ledyard, Mashantucket, New London, and the Noank and Mystic edge. We are an owner-run company out of Clinton. Thomas Magnoli measures, quotes and supervises every job, and in 12 years he has installed screens, awnings and shades on more than 500 projects around Connecticut.
Motorized retractable screens in Groton CT, village by village
Groton is not one place. The town has five villages and the City of Groton, and a screen that makes sense in one can be the wrong call in another.
Groton Long PointOpen to the Sound
Cottages and year-round homes on a point sticking out into the Sound get the most wind in town. On these lots we lean toward the wind mesh option, a deeper reveal under a roof overhang, and screens set between posts or under a porch ceiling where a roof takes some of the weather. We also tell people plainly that a screen on an open, unprotected facade is the first thing to retract when the forecast turns.
Many beach-area communities have their own association rules for exterior changes. Ask before you order, and we will send drawings.
Noank and the Mystic edgeVillage streets and harbors
Noank is a small fishing village with tight lots, older houses and porches built close to the street. Privacy mesh is a common request here, because a screen can turn a street-facing porch into a room without closing it in. Houses near the Mystic River and the harbor deal with salt air, so the powder-coated aluminum housing and stainless hardware matter more than they would inland. Our Old Saybrook awning page covers the same coastal hardware questions.
Center Groton, Poquonnock Bridge and the City of GrotonNeighborhood decks and patios
Here the typical job is a rear deck or a patio off a kitchen slider. The problem is usually evening mosquitoes and afternoon sun on a south or west exposure. A screen on the open side of the deck, or a retractable door screen on the slider, solves most of it. For a patio with no roof, the better answer is often an awning for shade and a screen only if you also have bug trouble.
Gales Ferry and LedyardThames River and wooded lots
Gales Ferry sits on the eastern bank of the Thames in the town of Ledyard, and Ledyard is Groton’s northern neighbor. Lots tend to be larger and wooded, which means shade is less of a problem and insects, pollen and falling debris are more of one. Screened porches and decks that back onto trees are the usual job. See our post on mosquito protection with retractable screens for how mesh choice changes what gets through.
MashantucketInland, in Ledyard
Mashantucket is inland and more sheltered from salt and wind than the villages on the water. If you are in the area, we are happy to measure, but we do not know the housing and approval rules for every parcel, so please confirm with your housing office or association before ordering anything attached to the structure.
New LondonDense lots, older housing
New London across the Thames has many older multifamily homes and porches built close together. Privacy and street-facing glare are the common concerns, and exterior solar shades on porch openings are sometimes a better fit than a screen. If you rent, get your landlord’s written approval first because the housing mounts to the structure.

Wind and salt decide the spec more than looks
On the Connecticut shore the weather, not the style, is what shortens the life of outdoor hardware. Three things we plan for in Groton:
Salt air
Powder-coated aluminum housings and rails resist salt corrosion far better than steel, and stainless fasteners keep rust from streaking trim. Rinse the mesh and tracks with fresh water now and then and wipe the tracks clean.
Wind
Our screens are rated for moderate wind. Wind mesh reduces gusts, and an optional wind sensor retracts the screen on its own. Learn more about this on our windbreak screens page.
Storm season
A retractable screen is not a storm shutter. Before a hurricane or nor’easter, roll it up. Winter care is covered in our winterizing guide.
Which product fits which Groton problem
The honest answer to “screen, awning or shade?” depends on what is annoying you. This is how we sort it out on a first visit:
| What bothers you | Usually the right product | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mosquitoes and gnats at dusk | Motorized retractable screen | Tight insect mesh on guide tracks keeps them out and keeps the breeze |
| Hot afternoon sun on an open patio | Retractable awning | Overhead shade, and it keeps you dry in light rain |
| Glare and heat through windows or sliders | Exterior solar shade | Blocks sun before it reaches the glass |
| Bugs coming through a slider | Retractable door screen | Slim, retracts out of the way when you walk through |
| Wind on an exposed point | Wind mesh screen, with limits | Reduces gusts but is not a windbreak wall |
When screens are not the right product. If your main problem is heat, a screen alone will not fix it. If the opening faces open water with nothing to shelter it, a screen will see constant gusts and you will be retracting it often. If the structure is a flat open deck with no overhead frame or roof, there may be nothing to mount the housing to, and an awning or a freestanding structure would make more sense. We will say so at the estimate.
Not sure which? Our post on motorized screens versus retractable awnings walks through it, and screen rooms versus retractable screens covers the fixed alternative.

What retractable screens cost around Groton
These are installed ranges for Connecticut projects, the same figures we publish in our screen cost guide. They depend on size, mesh, motor, mounting surface and finish, and we quote after measuring.
| Scope | Typical installed range |
|---|---|
| Single door or small opening | $800 to $3,000 |
| Large porch or patio opening (8 to 16 ft) | $2,500 to $7,000 |
| Full multi-bay enclosure | $8,000 to $20,000+ |
Awnings are priced separately, with motorized models commonly in the $4,500 to $14,000+ range depending on width, projection and options. Coastal homes with masonry or non-standard mounting often land at the higher end, because anchoring takes more time. See the retractable awning cost breakdown for the details.
Bugs, ticks and what the state actually tracks
Connecticut runs a Mosquito Management Program through DEEP, the Agricultural Experiment Station and the Department of Public Health. The program traps mosquitoes around the state and tests them for viruses such as West Nile. Its guidance for homeowners is to eliminate standing water and use repellents, which is good advice for any yard. You can read it at the Connecticut Mosquito Management Program.
A screen is one more layer. It does not replace draining the birdbath or the stray bucket, but it does give you a place to sit at dusk without covering up. Wooded Gales Ferry and Ledyard yards, and marsh-edge streets in Noank and along the rivers, are where we hear about it most. Screens do not help with ticks in the lawn, and we will not claim they do.

Groton screen questions, answered
Do you install motorized retractable screens in Groton, Gales Ferry, Ledyard and Mashantucket?
Yes. Shoreline Shade is based in Clinton and serves all of Connecticut, including Groton and its villages, Gales Ferry in Ledyard, Mashantucket, New London, and the Noank and Mystic edge. Every project starts with a free on-site measurement, because custom screens cannot be resized after they are built.
How much do motorized retractable screens cost for a Groton home?
It depends on the opening. A single door or small opening typically runs $800 to $3,000 installed, a large porch or patio opening of 8 to 16 feet runs about $2,500 to $7,000, and a full multi-bay enclosure runs $8,000 to $20,000 or more. Mesh type, motor and controls, mounting surface and finish all move the number, so we quote after measuring. Our screen cost guide lays out the variables.
Will a retractable screen hold up to wind off the Sound or the Thames?
Our screens are rated for moderate wind. A wind mesh and an optional wind sensor that retracts the screen automatically help on exposed lots, but no retractable screen is a storm barrier. On a waterfront or point-of-land property we will tell you honestly if the exposure is too much for a screen and suggest a different layout.
Can screens stay up through a nor’easter?
No. We recommend retracting screens, and awnings too, before severe weather. The wind sensor is a safeguard, not a replacement for retracting by hand when a named storm is forecast. Our winterizing guide covers cold-season care.
Do I need a permit for a motorized retractable screen in Groton?
Many installations on a private porch or patio do not need one, but that depends on the structure, the village and any association or special district rules. If your home sits in a coastal flood zone or a community with architectural review, check with the town or your association before you order. We can supply drawings and finish samples for a submission.
Is a screen, an awning or a solar shade better for my Groton patio?
If bugs are the problem, a screen. If you want to sit under overhead shade and stay dry in light rain, an awning. If glare and heat through the windows are the problem, exterior solar shades. Many homes end up with two products, and we will recommend the one that fits before the one that earns us more.
